EUDORA, Kan. (AP) -- Eudora's fire chief was fired late Monday after being charged with felony criminal damage to property.

Spencer McCabe, Eudora's full-time fire chief since April 2003, allegedly caused more than $1,000 damage to a bathroom at a Holiday Inn in Olathe over the weekend, Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison said.

Eudora Police Chief Greg Dahlem and some off-duty Eudora police officers also were at the party to celebrate an officer's wife's birthday, said City Administrator Mike Yanez.

There were no other arrests.

After a Monday evening meeting with McCabe, Yanez said he relieved McCabe of his duties with pay pending further action by the mayor and city council.

Yanez declined to say what McCabe allegedly did to cause the damage. Morrison said alcohol was involved, but he also declined to be more specific about how the damage occurred.

``He obviously displayed some incredibly poor judgment,'' Morrison said.

McCabe was released from jail Monday on $1,000 bond, according to a jail officer.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Underwood, a volunteer, was put in charge of the fire department, Yanez said.

Eudora is located in eastern Kansas about 40 miles west of Kansas City.
