As part of Lexington's Martin Luther King celebration, the YWCA announced a special honor for one of the city's fallen heroes.

Next month will mark the one year anniversary of the death of Lexington firefighter, Brenda Cowan.

Monday, the president of the YWCA board of directors announced the creation of the YWCA of Lexington, Brenda D. Cowan Coalition for Kentucky. The new endeavor will do two things, empower women and eliminate racism.

It's a project the Cowan family says would make Brenda smile up in heaven.

Lt. Brenda Cowan died while responding to a call on Adams Lane on February 13th of last year. The man police say fatally shot Cowan has been declared incompetent to stand trial.

Cowan's family says they are appreciative of all the love and support they have received from the Lexington fire department, as well as the city of Lexington.
