Firefighters from 10 different departments battled flames and single digit temperatures in Walkerton overnight.

When the smoke had cleared, a local landmark had been destroyed.

The Welco Truck Stop is normally open 24-hours, but Sunday night the business closed about 9:00. Roughly an hour later, it was a passerby, who noticed the building was on fire.

While there was no loss of life in the fire at the Welco Truck Stop on Roosevelt Rd. in Walkerton, some feel like they lost a lifetime's worth of memories, when the building burned.

"It's just been like a home," said Jane Bell, former employee. "I started working here when I was 12-years-old, and basically worked here most of my life."

Employees of the past and present came to spread flowers, and shed tears on Monday in front of the shell of a business that had seemingly always been there.
