PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A crash involving a tractor-trailer and a fire truck closed a section of Interstate 95 near Philadelphia International Airport for more than seven hours Tuesday.

The accident happened as an airport fire truck was in the process of making a U-turn in an area reserved for emergency vehicles. The truck was hit broadside by the tractor trailer around 2:30 a.m., police said.

The tractor trailer burst into flames, but its driver escaped and was not seriously injured, Tinicum Township police said. Two firefighters, including one who was ejected through the windshield, were also hurt, but police said their injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The accident cleanup made a mess of the morning commute for people driving between Philadelphia and its southwestern suburbs.

At one point, I-95 was closed in both directions. Cleanup and investigation forced the closure of portions of the southbound lanes until shortly after 9:30 a.m.

The accident remained under investigation Tuesday and no charges were immediately filed against either driver, police said.
