CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (AP) -- The family of a 10-year-old girl who died after being hit in the head by a flailing fire hose has hired an investigator to look into the accident, a borough solicitor said.
An investigator for the family of Erin Schmidt has examined the Coraopolis Volunteer Fire Department truck involved in the accident, said Coraopolis solicitor Richard Start.
The family has also hired an attorney, Start said.
The fire department found that its members' actions didn't contribute to the accident, Start said, but it is cooperating with the family's investigation.
Allegheny County Police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said an accident report shouldn't be ready for weeks, but he doesn't expect any criminal charges to be filed.
Erin was pronounced dead the night of Aug. 20 after she and a friend were hit by a six-pound nozzle on a fire hose that became uncoiled as a truck rushed past her to a fire in Coraopolis, about 10 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.
