DiBernardo along with five other firefighters jumped from a fourth floor rear window after they became trapped above the fire. Two of the firefighters, Lieutenant Curtis Meyran and Lieutenant John G. Bellew later succumbed to their injuries at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx.

DiBernardo is an instructor at the Suffolk County Fire Academy and a member of the Northern Brookhaven Rescue Team and the Setauket Fire Department. Please help support FF DiBernardo by donating blood.
