EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) -- A small plane attempting to land at a local airfield on Wednesday clipped a fence and crashed, killing one of the two people aboard, authorities said.

The single-engine Lancair 235 hit the ground at the end of the Gillespie Field runway in this San Diego suburb about 2:30 p.m. It came to rest upside down, said El Cajon Fire Department spokeswoman Monica Zech.

The man and woman who were aboard were taken to separate hospitals, and one of them was later pronounced dead. No other information on their identities or the survivor's condition were immediately available.
