West Virginia Fire Captain: About 100 Tires Burned

CLEAR CREEK, W.Va. (AP) -- About 100 coal truck tires were set on fire on abandoned property in Clear Creek, the town's volunteer fire department captain has said.

Firefighters responded to the blaze about 8 p.m. Tuesday, controlling it after about two hours, said Jarrod Peters. They returned to the site early Wednesday when the fire rekindled, he said.

``We're not real sure what caused it, but it's suspected arson,'' Peters said.

There were no suspects Wednesday in the fire.

The tires were located in a field on property once owned by the Raleigh County Board of Education and most recently owned by a trucking company, Peters said. He did not know the name of the company.

The tires had likely been in the field for eight or nine years, he said.

Runoff from water mixing with residue from the burned rubber was contained, and no injuries were reported, Peters said.

It is illegal to burn tires, he said.

The state fire marshal and the Department of Environmental Protection were contacted to help with the investigation.
