Two volunteer firefighters from the Lower Merion town of Belmont Hills were awaiting arraignment yesterday on aggravated assault charges after allegedly beating a Narberth firefighter with a baseball bat during a social at the Belmont Hills firehouse last week.

Rocco Burdo, 28, and his brother, Peter Burdo, 21, both of the first block of Washington Avenue, Belmont Hills, were in Montgomery County Prison last night after failing to post bail from their Friday arrest.

Both men - whose father, Rocco Burdo Sr., is fire company chief and Lower Merion township commissioner - are scheduled to go before Magisterial Justice Henry Schireson for arraignment this week.

According to court records, the fight started at 1 a.m. Friday when the Narberth firefighter teased a member of the Belmont Hills company that he looked too young to drink. Rocco Burdo became upset and argued with the Narberth firefighter. Later that evening, Rocco Burdo was seen punching the man. Peter Burdo was seen hitting him with a bat.

Police said two other men tried to break up the fight and were also assaulted.

The three victims were injured, and the Narberth firefighter sustained serious head injuries. He was treated at a hospital and released.

Both brothers are facing charges of assault, simple assault, possessing instruments of crime, and related offenses. Rocco Burdo's bail was set at $100,000, and Peter Burdo's bail at $50,000.
