FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) -- A former Bountiful firefighter and emergency medical technician faces up to five years in prison for trying to poison his pregnant girlfriend.

Brandon Weaver pleaded guilty Monday to a third-degree felony count of surreptitious administration of a substance.

Prosecutors will recommend probation when he is sentenced Sept. 8. That was included in the plea bargain that saw prosecutors drop a child abuse homicide charge against Weaver.

Prosecutors say the 23-year-old tried to kill his unborn twins in March by putting blood-thinner medication in the 32-year-old woman's peanut butter sandwich.

The woman was about 11 weeks pregnant at the time and ate a portion of the sandwich before throwing it away because it tasted funny. The woman and the fetuses were not hurt.
