ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) -- Inmates at the Randolph County Jail had to be evacuated this week after allegedly starting two fires on the facility's second floor.

No one was injured Monday in the early morning fires.

The inmates used paper, magazines, books and bags of rags to fuel the first fire, which was quickly extinguished by a county correctional officer, Elkins Fire Chief Mitch Tacy said. A second fire was large enough to require assistance from the Elkins Fire Department.

The jail's 54 inmates were taken to the fenced-in recreational yard while a fire crew put out the blaze, said Chief Deputy John Channell with the Randolph County Sheriff's Department.

Six inmates were sent to regional jails and four were sent to another county jail for holding so areas of the Randolph County Jail could be cleaned and painted.

The fire caused no structural damage, but ``the entire building was smoked,'' Tacy said.
