New Brunswick, New Jersey Promotes Black, Hispanic Firefighters

In April, the Vulcan Pioneers, a local branch of a civil rights organization for firefighters, protested the lack of minorities hired by and promoted within the fire department, but yesterday an African-American firefighter and a Hispanic firefighter in New Brunswick were promoted to lieutenant
An African-American firefighter and a Hispanic firefighter in New Brunswick were promoted yesterday to lieutenant, three months after a group of minority firefighters complained the city was not hiring or giving raises to enough minorities in the department.

The promotions of Rudy Harris, an African-American, and William Borke III, who is Hispanic, raised the number of supervisory positions held by minorities to six. There are 20 supervisors in the department.
