CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) -- Fire destroyed one apartment on the second floor and three on the third floor of a three-story brick apartment building, killing a second-floor resident, officials said.

The victim, who wasn't immediately identified, was in the second-floor apartment where the blaze apparently started, authorities said.

Firefighters with a ladder truck rescued a man and a girl from a third-floor apartment, said Roger Kohr, a spokesman for the Cumberland County Office of Emergency Preparedness.

Officials hadn't determined the cause of the fire, battled for three hours by nearly 75 firefighters from several departments.
