Rosenberg, TX -- Rosenberg Fire Department Training and Safety Officer David Bialas, 47, was seriously injured Thursday evening when his motorcycle was struck by a car near the intersection of Avenue I and Eighth Street.
Rosenberg Police Department Public Information Officer Carol Rees said the accident occurred at 8:43 p.m., and Officer Robert Hensley was dispatched immediately to the 1000 block of Eighth Street to investigate.
Rees said Bialas was taken by Sky Med helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston "with extensive injuries."
She said according to the report, Bialas was driving his 2003 red Harley-Davidson westbound on the inside lane of the 2500 block of Avenue I when a 1997 red two-door Ford Mustang, traveling east on the inside lane, "attempted to turn into a parking lot while crossing in front of the motorcycle."
"The motorcycle struck the Ford Mustang on the passenger side of the vehicle, resulting in the driver of the motorcycle being ejected and thrown a short distance," said Rees.
She said Ortega, 61, was cited for failure to yield right-of-way.
Sgt. Joe Gifford said Bialas was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred.
Rosenberg Fire Chief Greg Mensik described Bialas as "an asset to the department," and said, "Hopefully, he can return soon."
