HAMEL, Ill. (AP) -- Three members of a Missouri family and a Chicago firefighter were among five people killed in a fiery accident over the weekend on Interstate 55 in Madison County.
Carrie Lindsey, 50, her husband, Mike Shelton, 54, and their daughter, Emily Shelton, 14, all of Webster Groves, Mo., were returning from a music festival in Chicago when they died in the accident Sunday, Shelton's brother, Gary Shelton told the St. Louis Post Dispatch.
Chicago Fire department spokeswoman Rosa Escareno said James Buckley also died in the accident, but she had no further information on the accident. Buckley was recently promoted to battalion chief of the eighth battalion. He previously was captain of truck 36, which worked on Chicago's North Side.
The Madison County coroner's office had not released the victims' identities as of Monday night.
According to police, the Webster Groves family's 1998 Subaru Forester was southbound on I-55 and broadsided a 1963 Oldsmobile that had left the highway's northbound lanes, went through the median and into the Subaru's path.
Both cars then burst into flames, said Illinois State police Master Sergeant Dennis Bauers.
Authorities are still investigating the accident that closed the interstate about 30 miles northeast of St. Louis and backed up traffic for miles.
