MONTANA CITY (AP) -- Authorities closed a portion of Interstate 15 near here Monday afternoon after a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline ran off the highway and one of its tankers overturned.
Northbound lanes were reopened a few hours later and one southbound lane and the frontage road were back in use, officials said.
The driver and a passenger in the Cenex Harvest States Transportation truck were taken to a Helena hospital for observation, but did not appear to suffer any serious injuries, officials said.
One trailer landed on its side and leaked several thousand gallons of gasoline along the west side of the highway, said Pat McKelvey with the Clancy Fire Department.
Initially, the state Highway Patrol closed the interestate between Montana City and Helena as a precaution.
McKelvey said the 9,000 gallons that remained in the tanker was pumped out by about 10 p.m. but he expected cleanup and removal of debris would continue well into Tuesday.
The accident occurred about a mile north of the Montana City exit. Montana City is about 5 miles south of Helena.
The patrol said cause of the accident was still under investigation.
