(New York -WABC, December 8, 2004 ) -- An electrical transmission line caught fire at a Consolidated Edison power station in Lower Manhattan early Wednesday, officials said. No injuries or outages were reported.

The line feeds power into electrical equipment and is located at a Con Ed power station on East 14th Street at Avenue C. It burst into flame at about 3:26 a.m.

The fire burned for hours, partly because firefighters had to wait for Con Ed to ground the transformer before applying foam to the blaze.

It was out just before 6:00 a.m. and the cause is under investigation, said D. Joy Faber, a Con Ed spokeswoman.

Con Ed says there were no power outages or injuries.

In July 2002, a transformer at the same plant exploded, cutting off power to about 63,000 customers for seven hours. That incident was blamed on a short circuit.
