BILOXI, Miss. (AP) -- Two people were slightly injured while jumping off a second-floor balcony to escape a fire that destroyed six units of the Saxony Apartments.

The fire started about 1:10 p.m. Sunday and quickly spread through the front portion of the two-story, 48-unit New Orleans-style brick complex on U.S. 90 near the beach.

About 40 residents were displaced by the fire. Six apartments were destroyed, while others received smoke and water damage.

More than 50 firefighters were on the scene.

No serious injuries were reported, police said, though the two residents who jumped from the balcony suffered minor injuries and drove themselves to a hospital.

Biloxi police officer T.K. Hendricks said one of the residents who jumped had cuts and bruises. A Biloxi firefighter was also taken to Biloxi Regional Medical Center after experiencing problems with high blood pressure.

Hendricks said the fire appeared to have started in one of the front apartments.

Fire Chief David Roberts said the investigation was continuing.

Displaced residents are staying free at various casino resorts on the coast.
