CONWAY, S.C. (AP) -- A Georgia man returning home with his father stepped in front of a fire truck traveling along U.S. Highway 501 after an argument with his dad, authorities said.
Charles Shirey, 29, of Augusta, Ga., jumped in front of the fire engine Monday about 8:45 p.m. after his father pulled his vehicle off the highway near Aynor, Horry County authorities said. Shirey first stepped in front of a sport utility vehicle, which swerved and missed him.
Three firefighters were on the engine when it hit the man.
``Public safety officials are trained to save and protect lives,'' Horry County Fire Chief Garry Alderman said. ``When an incident of this nature occurs, it is very emotional on all parties.''
