(Peekskill-WABC, December 7, 2004) -- Firefighters were still on the scene this morning, after a massive fire that ripped through a strip mall. At one point, the flames were hot enough that some folks living nearby were evacuated. Eyewitness News' Lisa Colagrossi has more.
Spectacular is the only word to describe this fire. They are still fighting it right now, and they've got the ladders up.
This broke out shortly after 11:00 p.m. at the Peekskill shopping center along Main Street. Flames shoot high into the sky, and there was a lot of heavy smoke.
The fire was reportedly located at the Lincoln Mercury dealership here. Fire crews say cars were exploding and the flames were intense.
Here are some of the numbers on this fire: Eleven engines, 5 ladders, 13 towns involved in this effort, 175 firefighters in all.
At one point overnight, flames were shooting five feet into the the air.
Some nearby residents had to be evacuate. They live in an apartment complex right behind the dealership. Once the fire was contained, they were let back into their homes.
So far, the focus is still on getting the fire out and then the investigation will begin into how this started.
