Town and Horry County officials as well as some insurance experts will meet with residents later this month to discuss a proposal to relocate or expand the county's Aynor fire station.
Horry County officials hope to offer more space and living quarters to firefighters working at the Aynor-area station, Horry County Councilman John Boyd told Town Council on Monday during its regular meeting.
The county's public safety committee meeting will discuss the issue at 6 p.m. March 21 at John Dawsey Senior Center.
Town Councilman John Gardner and Mayor John Dawsey each told Boyd they liked having the county's firefighters and engines located in town.
"Perception-wise, it's good to know you have firetrucks in downtown Aynor," Gardner said.
County officials have considered moving the station to county-owned property on Jordanville Road because the current station is on leased property.
"My position has been that we need to purchase the land if we're going to do an addition there," Boyd said during the meeting.
There is enough space to expand the current facility, which is located in the same building as the Horry County magistrate's office on Ninth Avenue, Boyd said. To do so would require using a rear parking area.
Boyd said the possible move should not affect the area's rating set by the Insurance Services Office, which determines the insurance premium on a particular property or structure.
In other business, Town Council voted to spend the remainder of a 2004 Pard grant on playground equipment for the town park. The money must be used for park improvements by May 31 and was received to install vinyl siding on the shelter.
The council will apply for another grant for 2005 to make additional improvements such as improving drainage in the middle of the park.
