Six people survived a terrifying 200-foot tumble down an embankment Sunday morning off Grizzly Peak Boulevard near Claremont Avenue in the Oakland hills.

Oakland firefighters removed two passengers from the vehicle and took them to Highland Hospital, said Oakland Fire Department Lt. Melinda Drayton. They were reported to be in stable condition. Two others were treated for minor injuries and released on the scene, and the remaining two were not injured, Drayton said.

The accident occurred as a group of friends drove home caravan-style after spending most of the night at various spots on Grizzly Peak. The lead car, a 2002 Toyota Corolla, swerved to avoid hitting a deer and careened off the road just before 5 a.m.

Narrowly missing a ravine, the car hit a wooded area, which slowed the descent, Drayton said.

"It helped tremendously because they had a cushion going down," she said.

Authorities have not identified any of the passengers. The driver is described as a woman in her early 20s.

While the ridge is known as a popular drinking spot, alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
