Rescuers Struck at North Carolina Accident Scene

State highway patrol troopers are charging an 18-year-old after a firefighter, an E-M-S worker and a nurse where hit while trying to help out a crash victim.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- State highway patrol troopers are charging an 18-year-old after a firefighter, an E-M-S worker and a nurse where hit while trying to help out a crash victim.

The accident happened early today on N.C. 22 just south of Coleridge in Randolph County.

A young girl had lost control of her vehicle and ran off the road.

E-M-S workers and firefighters from the Coleridge Volunteer Fire Department were on scene helping when another car ran off the road, striking four people helping the original accident.

The breaks on the vehicle had gone out.

He also hit a nurse who had stopped to help. She was transported to Duke University Medical Center and listed in critical condition. The firefighter and E-M-S worker suffered only minor injuries.

Anthony Martin of Bennett is being charged with failure to reduce speed and operating a vehicle with improper breaks.
