A Fort Lauderdale man, 42, was in Jackson Memorial Hospital's burn center unit Sunday after being burned over 70 percent of his body by an unknown chemical, Fire-Rescue Division Chief Stephen McInerny said.

Paramedics responded at 5:58 p.m. Saturday to the 1100 block of Northwest Second Street, where they rescued a man sitting on a bench with his face and other parts of his body severely burned, McInerny said. The man's name was not released.

McInerny said the victim reported that someone in a crack house had set him on fire.

The burns were consistent with injuries caused by a chemical, McInerny said.

The man was taken to the Miami-Dade County hospital after receiving care at Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale.
