CHALMETTE, La. (AP) -- An 11-year-old boy suffered second-degree burns to his left leg, arm and hand on New Year's Eve when a sparkler he was holding ignited bottle rockets in his pants pocket, authorities said.

St. Bernard Parish Fire Chief Thomas Stone said the boy was treated at University Hospital in New Orleans.

Officials said the child was shooting fireworks at the home of relatives in Arabi at about 11:15 p.m. when a sparkler he held ignited small bottle rockets sticking up in his left pants pocket.
