The episode began about 7 p.m. Tuesday at the home of Richard Jason Johnson's parents near Joe Pool Lake.
``I understand that he was making threats and being suicidal, that he would do harm to himself unless his parents helped him,'' said Detective John Brimmer, the police spokesman.
``In talking to some of the officers here at the scene, I understand that he had actually been kicked out of the home some time back and they've been having some problems with him,'' he said.
Johnson returned to his parents' home with a handgun and held police at bay for about an hour, threatening to kill himself, police said. Officers said he stabbed himself and told officers that either they would have to shoot him or he would shoot himself.
Finally, he set fire to the house and left, walking down the street flanked by officers. When he finally fired once at officers, an officer returned fire, wounding Johnson once in the chest, fatally.
No officers were wounded in the exchange. The officer who shot Johnson has been put on routine administrative duties pending an investigation, Brimmer said.
His parents' home appeared to be a total loss from the fire, police said.
