BALMORHEA, Texas (AP) -- A Los Angeles woman and three of her grandchildren died Wednesday night when their van overturned on Interstate 10 in West Texas, the Department of Public Safety said. Four people were injured.
Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lisa Block said the 11-passenger van was one of three traveling together from Los Angeles to Houston for a wedding. Passengers in the other two vans were taken to Pecos to spend the night, the Pecos Enterprise reported.
Block identified those killed as 44-year-old Edna Tyars and her grandchildren, 4-month-old Kamyrne Zaire Lytle, 7-year-old Stephan Tyars and 14-year-old Shereese Tyars.
Grandfather Luther Tyars, 51, was airlifted to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Three people were treated for scrapes and cuts at Reeves County Hospital, the hospital said. Block identified them as Coreyante Hayes, 9; Clishawnda Weakley, 12; and Deshawn Evans, 38. The three were identified as members of the family.
Weakley was airlifted to Covenant Children's Hospital in Lubbock, Block said.
She said Luther Tyars was driving the van when it left the highway about 7:30 p.m. and overturned two times in the center median of the road before coming to rest upright across the eastbound lanes of the highway.
``We're not sure why he left the road,'' Block said.
She said the other vans were following behind and were not involved in the crash.
