New Jersey Firefighters Union Pushing For Dangerous Firehouse To Be Repaired

Dec. 3, 2004
Newark Fire Department spokesman Thaddeus Kennedy said he had no information about the condition of the firehouse.

The Clinton Place firehouse needs immediate repairs, say the heads of the two unions representing Newark firefighters and superior officers.

There are exposed wires, open sewer pipes and a damaged staircase that make the facility at the corner of West Runyon Street a difficult place for the firefighters of Engine 17 and Engine Company 29 to occupy, they said.

Dave Giordano, president of the Newark Firefighters Union, and John Sandella, president of the Newark Fire Officers Union, both said they are concerned about the safety of the 40 firefighters that use the facility.

"It's a lack of concern from the firefighter leadership," said Giordano.
