LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A van collided with a parking lot shuttle bus at Los Angeles International Airport on Thursday, killing the van driver and injuring 22 other people, authorities said.
Firefighters had to pry the driver of the van from the wreckage and he died at a hospital, Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. The fatality, a Los Angeles man, was the sole occupant of the van.
The injured included the bus driver and passengers. Five were in critical condition when they were taken to area hospitals and clinics, Humphrey said.
The 9:52 a.m. collision occurred on the 96th Street bridge on airport property leading from remote parking Lot C to passenger terminals, Humphrey said.
There were no details on the cause of the crash.
Airport spokeswoman Nancy Castles said the 96th Street bridge was closed indefinitely while investigators examined the crash site. Lot C remained open and other routes to the airport were available.
``The impact was so forceful that it trapped the driver in the badly mangled wreckage of the van,'' Humphrey said.
