One Miami-Dade County firefighter was recovering at Mercy Hospital on Tuesday and three others were treated and released after they were overcome by Freon gas inside Aventura high-rise condominium, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
The firemen, whose names have not been released, were responding to an alarm at about 9:35 p.m. in the machinery room on the 30th floor of the Landmark condos, 20185 E. Country Club Dr., said Lt. Eric Baum, a department spokesman.
Once they were in the room, there were no visible flames or smoke, Baum said. But as the firefighters continued to check, they became dizzy due to a faulty air-conditioner unit that was leaking large amounts of Freon, Baum said.
They were taken to the hospital while a hazardous materials unit aired out the room with large fans, Baum said.
No residents live on the 30th floor and no one else was injured.
