The Fire Department is set to start random drug testing on August 1st.

The department will test firefighters, officers in the field, department chiefs, and other supervisors.

Twenty-five percent of the force is to be tested within a year and eventually the program will expand to paramedics, EMTs, and fire marshals.

Newly appointed Chief of Department Peter Hayden says anyone who fails the test will be fired on the spot.

This comes after a series of recent incidents involving firefighters found to have used drugs or alcohol.
