WASHINGTON, Pa. (AP) -- A family mourning the death of a loved one discovered that someone had burglarized the dead man's apartment.

James Hines Jr. 45, of Washington, Pa., was killed in the Christmas Eve fire at the Canonsburg home of his niece, whom he was babysitting.

The girl's parents were driving by James Hines' apartment in Washington when they noticed all the lights on Wednesday. The couple went inside and found the apartment had been ransacked and several items stolen, including Hines' stereo.

``The outpouring from total strangers has been phenomenal. And then to go and find this, it's heartbreaking,'' said Nancy Martinez, a relative.

Another family member, Bill Sickles, had another word for it: despicable.

``How anybody could be that low is hard to imagine,'' Sickles said.
