PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A large fire broke out early Thursday morning at a church in the Cobbs Creek neighborhood of Philadelphia, causing about 120 people living nearby to be evacuated from their homes, the fire commissioner said.

Nobody was inside the Sharon Baptist Church when it caught fire at about 4 a.m., and the fire was declared under control before 7 a.m., Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said. No injuries were reported from the five-alarm fire, Ayers said.

Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell credited people in the area for waking up their elderly neighbors and getting them to a shelter that was set up at the nearby William Cullen Bryant Elementary School.

``This is a wonderful community, a stable one,'' Blackwell said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately determined.
