ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) -- Arlington County firefighters were investigating an early morning blaze Tuesday that started near a gas meter on the side of a small, single-family home.

One woman was sleeping inside the home on the 1,000 block of South Queen Street when the fire began about 3 a.m., fire department spokesman Tom Polera said. The woman was awakened by a passing motorist, who spotted the flames.

The side of the home suffered significant structural damage, Polera said.

There was no indication the fire was deliberately set although arson had not been ruled out, he said.

Authorities said the home had no working smoke detector.
