CHICAGO -- Three people were injured, one reported critically, Tuesday when a car crashed into a Subway sandwich shop on the Northwest Side. The incident occurred at the restaurant at 6352 N. Milwaukee Ave., said police News Affairs Sgt. Robert Cargie.
The Fire Department was notified of the crash at 11:28 a.m. and paramedics took three people to the hospital, said Fire Media Chief Dennis Gault.
One person was taken in critical condition to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, one person was taken in fair to serious condition to Resurrection Medical Center and one victim was taken in fair to serious condition to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, Gault said. An unconfirmed preliminary report indicated that one person had died, Cargie said.
The medical examiner's office had not been notified of a fatality from the accident as of 2:35 p.m., a spokeswoman for the Cook County medical examiner's office said. A "full pin-in response" was called for the incident, and three ambulances were sent to the scene, Gault said. There were a total of 30 firefighters and paramedics, and about 10 pieces of equipment, he said. The Subway shop was closed after the accident and "they're boarding up now," said restaurant manager Tina Dave. The driver was male and his car "just ran into the store, breaking all windows, glass and everything," Dave said. The car went "all the way" into the business, which sustained extensive damage, she said.
Dave, who has managed the restaurant for two years, said she did not know whether the injured included customers or restaurant workers. She did not know when the store would reopen for business.
