August 16, 2004 -- A Brooklyn fire captain yesterday became the 28th member of New York's Bravest to be busted for DWI this year, breaking the record for smoke-eaters facing alcohol-related charges set last year.

Brian Pritchard, a 23-year veteran, was busted shortly after midnight when he failed to signal at the intersection of Bloomingdale Road and West Veterans Road in the Woodrow section of Staten Island, authorities said.

Pritchard, 45, who is assigned to Engine Co. 330 in Bensonhurst, refused to take a Breathalyzer test and was arrested at the scene.

He was the second firefighter to be busted this month on charges of boozing and driving.

On Aug. 1, Staten Island firefighter Mark Blanchard was arrested when he allegedly hit a parked car and sailed 30 feet into a tree on Victory Boulevard.

Neither Blanchard, nor his female companion, was injured in that incident.

The FDNY's year of shame began New Year's Day, when Staten Island firefighter Michael Silvestri allegedly smashed fellow firefighter Robert Walsh over the head with a metal chair during a night of boozing in the Tottenville firehouse.
