New Jersey Fire Truck Sinks Into Pavement; Fire Crew Stunned

"It's devastating to watch your truck in a position like that," said Jersey City Fire Capt. Andrew Johnson.

Jersey City firefighters had a sinking feeling that something was wrong with their truck as they left a fire Saturday afternoon.

At 2:08 p.m., crews responded to a basement fire in a home on Lexington Avenue between West Side and Mallory avenues, Jersey City Fire Capt. Andrew Johnson said.

The fire was put out quickly and without injury, but as firefighters turned to head back to Ladder 11, they noticed the 60,000-pound truck was listing to one side, Johnson said. As firefighters watched, it began to seemingly sink into the pavement.

"It's devastating to watch your truck in a position like that," Johnson said. "It's sinking fast and it looks like it is going to topple over."
