MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) -- Three children died after a fire trapped them in their home, and their mother suffered burns and other injuries, officials said.

Flames were shooting out of the roof and windows of the two-story wooden home by the time firefighters arrived Saturday, fire officials said.

The children's mother, Julia Stephan, was burned and also was injured when she jumped out of a window to escape the flames, they said.

Firefighters found one child in a first-floor bedroom and two others in the basement.

Aiden White, 2, Anthony White, 20 months, and Mark Stephan, 7 months, died at St. Anthony's Medical Center of smoke inhalation, said Deputy Coroner Mark Huffman.

Stephan was in stable condition Sunday at St. Anthony's, a hospital supervisor said. ``She barely made it out,'' Huffman said. ``It was just a real bad thing all around.''

The state fire marshal was investigating the cause of the blaze.

A witness told police the children's father arrived home after the fire started but was unable to enter the home. Police said he had gone to a store to buy diapers.

Michigan City is in northwest Indiana on the shore of Lake Michigan.
