HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- The fire that killed a Madison Elementary School special education teacher was likely arson, Huntsville investigators said Monday.

April Collins, 24, sustained third-degree burns that covered more than 80 percent of her body while trying to escape the fire that destroyed her apartment and seven others at a Huntsville apartment complex, authorities said. She died Sunday morning at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Burn Center.

Another tenant, 23-year-old Kevin Kilgore, was also injured in Thursday's fire and discharged from Huntsville Hospital Saturday.

Investigators suspect arson as the motive in the fire, said Sgt. Ed Cain of the Huntsville police Major Crimes Unit. Police have questioned several people as part of the investigation but have made no arrests.

Principal Theresia Mullen said Collins, an Alabama A&M University graduate, was starting her second year as a teacher.

``She was always very outgoing and had a smile on her face. It's just a shock to us,'' she said.
