WESTLAND, Mich. (AP) -- A 50-year-old man was killed and his mother was critically injured when a fire broke out at a home Friday.

The man was trapped in the back bedroom where the fire started before it quickly spread through the house.

``It's a total loss, the inside is charred throughout the entire house,'' Chief Fire Deputy Kevin Riley told Detroit station WDIV-TV.

Passers-by who saw flames shooting from the windows of the house went in to rescue the woman.

``I saw a man carrying a woman out of the house, so I stopped and I and a couple of other people carried her to the house next door,'' said neighbor Michelle LaFehr, a recent nursing school graduate.

The woman was taken to a local hospital and was listed in critical condition Friday evening.

Investigators had not released a cause Friday.
