July 12, 2005 -- Three residents of a Lower East Side apartment were rescued last night by firefighters who found them unconscious and huddled together in the back room of their burning apartment.
The family - a mother, a teenage boy and an 18-month-old toddler - had run to the rear bedroom to escape the flames that broke out in their fifth-floor apartment at 286 South St. at around 9:30.
Officials are looking into the possibility the teenager set the fire, an FDNY spokesman said.
The three, who were taken to Bellevue Hospital suffering smoke inhalation, are expected to recover, officials said.
