PORT BYRON, Ill. (AP) -- Firefighters in Port Byron say they're shocked that two colleagues have been charged with stealing money from a memorial fund honoring a local soldier who died serving in Iraq.

James D. Roos and his wife Nicole were arrested Friday in connection with the theft of about five-thousand dollars from several fire department accounts.

Both are volunteer firefighters for the tiny northwestern Illinois village.

One of the funds was in honor of Sergeant Landis Garrison, who died of a non-combat wound while serving in Iraq in April. Garrison was a volunteer firefighter in Port Byron and a member of an Illinois National Guard unit based in Freeport.

Fire Chief Mike Poel says the volunteer firefighters were infuriated to find out one of their own was stealing money.
