Selena Sanclemente was hospitalized with first-degree burns from the Friday morning fire at her Bronx apartment, which apparently started in a faulty living-room electrical outlet, a fire department spokesman said.
Her 2-year-old daughter Sachiel died from her injuries Friday night, despite the efforts of a fire captain who had pulled her from the blaze. Her 10-year-old brother, Sam, was killed when he became wrapped in a curtain next to his bedroom window.
Ten firefighters were also hurt in the blaze in the Kingsbridge Heights neighborhood, which started at about 7:45 a.m. and was brought under control about 45 minutes later.
The captain who pulled Sachiel from the fire, Michael McAndrew, remained hospitalized Saturday with burns to his hands, arms and legs, said Firefighter Kevin Nolan, a fire department spokesman. The other nine firefighters suffered minor injuries, he said.
Selena Sanclemente and her husband, Sam, are Ecuadoran immigrants who have lived in the United States for about 15 years, neighbors said. He drives a livery cab and she ran a day-care center out of her home. It was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday when the fire started.
