(New York-WABC, November 23, 2004) -- There's some good news for the Long Island woman severely hurt when someone threw a turkey at her car. She reportedly has woken up from the medically induced coma she's been in for well over a week.
The 20-pound turkey was thrown from a passing car and smashed through her windshield. A friend in the passenger's seat kept the car from crashing, but the driver was badly hurt with a broken jaw and many broken bones in her face. The steering wheel of her car was crushed by the thrown object.
The 44 year-old woman is said to be breathing on her own now.
Six teenagers were arrested and charged in the violent prank. Eighteen year-old Ryan Cushing of Huntington is facing the most serious charges.
Police say the teens' crime spree began with stealing a credit card in a movie theater parking lot and ended when one or more of them tossed the turkey into oncoming traffic.
The sister of the victim did not want to be identified, but spoke to the press after the incident. She says her sister is the youngest of seven, and they are hoping she will wake up and have no cognitive damage.
