Fire caused severe damage to the top floor of a tri-level home on Scott Street in Morro Bay on Tuesday night, but no one appeared to be injured.

Police and firefighters received a call around 7:50 p.m. of the fire in the 1200 block. When they arrived, they found the top floor fully engulfed by flames. They battled the blaze back to a corner of the floor and kept it from spreading to the rest of the structure. However, sprinklers went off on the second level and caused some water damage.

Firefighters said the building was split with separate residences on each level, as well as a fourth residence in a building connected to the back of the home.

At least one person lived in the top level, but firefighters said she was not home at the time of the fire. The man who reported the fire lived on another level of the house. He suffered minor scrapes escaping from the home.

Firefighters said a kitten appeared to have died of carbon monoxide poisoning in the third level of the residence.

The cause of the fire was not known late Tuesday, and investigators were still trying to determine a cost estimate for the damage.
