SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- An apparently accidental fire at a house just outside the city near Upriver Dam left two people dead, partly because there were no smoke detectors inside, authorities said.

The bodies of John J. Gregg, 76, a retired railroad worker, and a woman whose name was being withheld, were found in a bedroom of the smoke-filled house late Friday, Spokane County Fire District 9 Deputy Chief Doug Bleeker said.

Cause was under investigation but the fire appeared to be accidental, County sheriff's Lt. Bill Rose said. Investigators said the fire started at one end of the house near the kitchen and dining room.

The house had no smoke detectors, Bleeker said.

``With smoke detectors, they may have had a different ending in this story,'' he said.
