COTTAGEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) -- The West Virginia University Extension Service and the state Division of Forestry offices in Jackson County have been destroyed in a fire.
The fire started around 2 p.m. Tuesday in the heating and air conditioning unit on the roof of the building located on the Jackson County Fairgrounds, said Michael Morrison, deputy chief of the Cottageville Volunteer Fire Department.
Everyone made it out safely, Morrison said.
The building, which is owned by the Jackson County Commission, was built in the 1970s and formerly was a group home. It was converted to an office building in the 1980s.
Some offices and their contents were saved, but the building appears to be a total loss, Morrison said.
Among the destroyed contents were a number of exhibits from a recent event and checks for winning entries.
