Kansas City officials are investigating why the fire alarms at a Best Western hotel failed to blare during a kitchen fire.
The fire started about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at U.S. 71 and Longview Road in south Kansas City. Apparently the night clerk noticed smoke in the lobby and called 911. The fire was contained to the kitchen, and no injuries were reported.
City codes require certain commercial buildings, including the hotel, to have alarms that not only warn guests but also alert dispatchers in case of a fire.
Kansas City Fire Marshal Greg Vincent said the department could issue a citation if the hotel knowingly had a faulty alarm system.
