The blaze was discovered about 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. --

Firefighters battled a blaze at a Spartanburg funeral home early Thursday morning.

The call came in at about 5:30 a.m., fire officials said and crews responded to the Callaham-Hicks Funeral Home, located at East St. Johns Street and North Dean Street.

Firefighters from four stations helped fight the fire that was brought under control at about 7 a.m..

Director of Spartanburg Public Safety Tony Fisher, "It's a historic black funeral home in community for many years (with) a lot of service to our community. It is a structure we could love to save and have in our community."

Officials said that none of the firefighters were hurt, but one person was treated for heat exhaustion.

The building was badly damaged. There was no word yet as to whether it can be salvaged.

There was one body under preparation when the fire broke out. The body was believed to have been unharmed by the fire.
