Dozens of firefighters were called to the 1100 block of West 120th Street just before 5:30 a.m. Monday after the fire was reported, police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said.
One firefighter suffered minor injuries to his hand. No other injuries were reported, Chicago Fire Chief Dennis Gault said.
The four-alarm blaze was at a huge, abandoned commercial building that is roughly two city blocks long, Kubiak said.
Gault said the fire was essentially out Monday night, but some firefighters remained at the scene to extinguish any hot spots uncovered when collapsed portions of the building were removed.
The fire caused extensive damage to the building, Gault said. He said the walls were still standing Monday afternoon, but much of the roof was destroyed.
